My friend has a iPhone 3gs old boot rom running on 3.1.3 unlocked and jailbroken. For some odd reason the iPhone does not pick up certain in certain areas his house but when we switched the SIM card to my iPhone that is on 4.1.2 unlocked. Do you think I need to update my friends firmware to fix the issue? Or its internal.

So you swap sim card to your iPhone (4.1.2) and what happen? You didn't tell us. It works? Or still no signal?

If there's still no signal then it's the signal problem rather than the phone.

If there's signal then maybe you can try to restore it using PWNAGE tool. Remember to preserve the baseband.
