Co-worker purchased an IP4 and got the "no sim card" message. He found a fix claiming he needed to put tape on sim card to prevent a " short" in the circuit or to get a more snug fit.
I told him I thought that was all BS and that he should just ask for exchange.

Has anyone ever heard of this issue?

It's not really BS. I'm using my iPhone 4 unlocked on tmobile and I encountered the NO SIM message frequently. I applied a layer of masking tape to my SIM and never saw it again.

Yes I had the exact same thing. First go to an ATT store and get a new SIM. If you still get the error make an appointment at an Apple store and they will exchange it.

No need to fool around with tape on a half ass fix when your phone is under warranty.

If unlocked and jailbroken (might even be just jailbroken) this is a common issue.
