No smooth fonts on the desktop

The other day I turned on my Powerbook G4 (OS X 10.2.8) and found that the fonts on the desktop were no longer anti-aliased, and while there's no harm done, it doesn't look that good. Can anyone suggest a way of turning font smoothing back on?
