I got my iPad Pro last month from Best Buy. I just started using headphones this week and have noticed that my iPad doesn't recognize when I unplug them so no sound will come out of the speakers.

Quick google search says the jack could be wet, dirty, or jammed.. it's *brand new* so I am not sure how it could be any of these things but tried the fixes anyway. No luck.

Did I just get a crap device?

Happens to me all the time. To be as non-technical as possible, there is a part in the headphone jack that will sometimes stick when the headphones are removed. Just plug the headphones in and pull them out more gently than the time before, and that should restore the sound through the external speakers.
