no sound notification when new mail?

So, this is hit or miss,

and, it is usually when the phone has gone to sleep, but I don't know WHY the sound disappears for new mail?

I know it is GETTING new email, since there is a new email tag on the mail icon, but the phone never made a peep?

any thoughts on getting it to work again?
