No sound notification with incoming text

iPhone 12 Pro: I cannot get incoming text messages to generate a sound notification. I have tried to set up sound notifications through settings, varied the sound, etc. but no luck. Calendar reminders trigger sound alerts with no problem. All suggestions appreciated. Thanks.
