No sound on macbook

Hi there, all the sound seems to have suddenly stopped working on my late 07 Macbook running 10.5.8. It's connected to external speakers but these work fine with any other input and the internal speaker doesn't work when these are disconnected either.

I've tried a restart but haven't got anywhere.

Have you taken a look at System Preferences > Sound > Output? What is shown and selected there as output device?
Are you sure, the sound is not muted?

Yep 100% and all that's listed in output is 'headphones - built in output' even if I disconnect the speakers.
