No sound output control on mini

Hi.
I've hooked my mini to sony home cinema sys.
via Toslink To Mini-Toslink 1m Cable,
It all works great(dts pass etc.) but there is no sound control from my mini
(it looks like it's disabled)
any reason why?

Because with digital audio, the amplifier (receiver, TV, etc.) controls the sound level.

That is correct - your amp will need to control the sound level.

Too bad we can't use that digital signal to send volume control commands.

I lost my sound control as well, just after I upgraded my HDD. Eventually figured out I hadn't reconnected the cable that joins the two halves of the mini inside. Wonder what else wouldn't have been working, seems a lot of trouble just for sound.

so there is no way of passing sound control to the receiver in digital audio ?

No, but some players like VLC have their own volume control that still works. Main volume control does not.
