no text sound or vibrate but shows on screen

i have an iphone 5. for some reason when I get a text, i never receive an alert or vibrate. the screen shows that i have a text. however, i never hear or feel that the message has been received.
I have tried rebooting and resetting the phone closing out imeesge app and restarting it. The problem seems to only being with iMessage everything else seems to work as far as notifications vibrate sound goes.

OH and yes I checked the silent button on the side.

Good to hear. That's usually one of the first things to try and I guess what others kind of assumed was attempted earlier in this case, but it seems like it wasn't.
