The magsafe charger got pulled off abruptly and although the MacBook had about 10% remaining it powered off immediately. Initially it wouldn't charge or power on, then I took the back off, disconnected and reconnected the battery and now it boots and charges. But none of the USB ports register that anything is plugged in. I've read that resetting the SMC can fix this but when I hold shift, control and alt and hold the power button, the LED on the magsafe connector doesn't flash to indicate that the SMC was reset and when I then start up, the problem remains. Is there another way to trigger (or force) an SMC reset, or any other way to resolve this? I know this machine is getting old now but it's still been solid up to now and replacing it isn't financially realistic at the moment. Thanks in advance for any help!

Hmm that's the first time I've heard that the LED on magsafe should flash to indicate SMC reset. Sorry I don't know how to help you.
