You can have someone leave you a voicemail or send you an email to see the indicator.

I'm not trying to be sarcastic or make you feel silly, but you do know it has to be a NEW voicemail or new email to receive a notification icon, right?

I know what you mean by indicator (the superscripted number in the upper right) but do new messages/voicemails show up on your phone without alerting you? If so, try a good ol' restore.
