So a couple of days ago I was running Adobe SB on my Mac (Mac has 5gigs of RAM btw) and was trying to get a mic to work but my computer slowed to the point where I couldn't do anything and eventually shut down. Well I get it plugged in and turn it on, and notice both the battery and wifi icons are missing. All I can do is open finder and folders. A couple of hours later they randomly come back. Well now they've disappeared again and I can't even open system preferences. It stalls my machine. Thoughts? Motherboard fried? Oh and I can't shut it down the normal way. Only hard shut downs turn it off.

I think it is unlikely something got fried (though if you heard pops or saw smoke then you may be right). If it were my machine I'd copy the data off, wipe the OS and reinstall. If that doesn't fix it then you probably are looking at some sort of hardware issue.
