no wifi signal

Hi!

my fathers mid 2011 2.7ghz mac always give a ' no wifi signal'

= not connected to the internet, wifi turned off. But the internet is working file.

Is this the start of a hardware issue or is this a bug in mavericks?

The reason for my question is that his apple care 3 year protection plan will end this month.

If that's the case, and if there's an Apple Store nearby, I'd set up an appointment right away and get it checked out.

Other than that...
Is an ethernet connection possible?
Ethernet (in my opinion) is always preferable to wireless, IF it's nearby and available....
