I got a new MacBook Pro 13" base about 2 months ago. Because of all the COVID-19 chaos and work pressure, I didn't get to turn on the machine more than a few times until last week when I had a spare day to set up and transfer all my stuff over from my old computer.

However ... when opening the new MacBook there is a small noise (like a "click") at 15-20 degrees, and a much louder "pop" (like a spring being sprung) at 70-80 degrees. This is not always consistent - sometimes the noise is louder/quieter. There is a similar noise when closing.

I have contacted Apple and they have asked me to ship the MacBook back to them - turnaround of 2 weeks.

So I'm asking for advice:
1. Is this a common problem or anything to worry about? It's annoying, but I could probably live with it.
2. Is this likely to cause a bigger problem later if I ignore it?
3. Is this something Apple will fix/replace?

Thanks for any replies.

Have a similar unit, bit higher end one. Mine does not make any noise or have any hesitation point in the opening of the lid. That's not normal and something is wrong. Can you tell which side it is coming from? That could help. I used to open all my laptops and work on them, but don't anymore since they are too difficult for me now. Could be several things in the hinge mechanism, including debris or misalignment/bent. Could be part of the cabling that is getting pinched somewhere.

In either case, its not what you want your unit to be doing. I have an issue that needs service too and am waiting for things to settle down since I was told 2-3 weeks is most likely and while I have an option to use in the meanwhile, I don't really want to wait that long. You called them on it. I would make sure they documented it so there they have it on record. Did you get AppleCare+ or regular warranty only?

The noise comes from the right side of the machine.

I've examined everything carefully and there is no cabinet pinching. The noise comes from within the machine, and likely from near the right side hinge.

Nope, didn't get Apple care+ ... regular warranty only.
