Noisy external hard drive with Lion?

Hey,
so I recently upgrade to Lion from SL, no problems at all so far... but now when I plug in my external hard drive (which I use to store media and big files, etc.) the drive is noisy as hell! The head(s) on the external drive are moving all over the place and making tons of noise...

Anybody know why?

I'm thinking maybe Lion has some automatic defrag routine or something for external drives that snow leopard didn't have? That's the only thing I can think of. I'm not running any programs that are even using the external drive. Just having it plugged it makes it super noisy... So what's Lion doing with it?

Any ideas?

@jj: Thanks but that's not it. Indexing finished over a week ago!

Not disputing your experience, I'm just chiming in to say I have 2 G-Tech external drives connected to my iMac i5 and the move to Lion has not had that effect.
