Is the fan in the iMac supposed to spin madly after waking up from sleep?

An iMac I returned a few weeks ago (with other problems not realted to this but was a factor in me returning it) did this and scared the hell out of me.

It was pretty darn loud, and happened every time the iMac woke up from sleep.

If it was a hot day and I was doing something GPU/CPU intensive I might accept it, but on a normal cool evening waking up from sleeping when it had effectively been doing nothing?

It did spin down eventually (after 30-45s), but I did feel it was a cause for concern as I've never read about this happening.

Thanks

Mine does a small fan spin up (barely audible) and then reduces down to nothing.
