Hey all, just received my new 2012 iMac i7, 1TB Fusion Drive, 680mx, 8GB

I've noticed that when it's idling i can hear the HDD like you would on a tower PC. It never 'sleeps' the HDD when the machine is not doing anything.

The sleep function works just fine, the machine goes to sleep and all noise stops, but i would have assumed that the HDD was meant to sleep when the machine is idle just like my MBP does.

I also have a very annoying high frequency noise, which after doing some snooping here seems to be related to CPU low clock speed state when idling. Other than stopping the CPU going to idle clock speeds, did anyone find out if there was fix or is this a matter for apple care?

The drive is probably just indexing itself, give it a couple of days to settle down. Until then relax. If the noise continues you have 90 days of AppleCare, give them a call if the noise continues.
