Am I losing anything by purchasing a new system from someone other than Apple?

I'm looking at buying a refurbed Dual 2G from a local store, and they say it qualifies for Applecare (which I would buy).

It's a good deal, but I won't get it if I can't just carry it in to an Apple store and get it serviced (especially seeing as it is a refurb).

I'd love to wait for the rev2 systems but I figure it will be April by the time I could get one physically in hand and i can't really wait that long :(

Have the dual 2Ghz refurbs had particularly bad/good reputations?

If you buy refurb from apple you get the same one year warranty as if it was new, which you may not get from a third party (90 days was the best I could find) I got a refurb cinema display from Apple...luv it

but if one buys applecare there's always the 3yrs, right? i had the impression that it doesn't matter where you buy the computer and you can attach applecare to it if less than one year has passed from original purchase.

and with applecare there's always best service, no matter who sold it. right?

In order to AppleCare to be valid, I think that you have to buy from an authorized dealer...

i work for a 3rd party apple specialist (we only sell apple and apple related products).
how it works at our store, is if you purchase an apple computer that still is under the original one year warranty of apple, you can purchase apple care on it.

however the computer only has warranty up till the original purchase date. so it it was purchased originally in september of 03... and you buy it in jan of 04, and buy apple care for it, your apple care will run out in sept of 06 and not jan of 07

unless the person is an authorized apple refurbishing place, or they purchase refurbs from directly apple (we also do this from time to time for sale items) this is how it would work
