just wondering. if your iOS is already jail broken is it theoretically possible to upgrade the os in the same way that a Linux distribution is upgraded?

I mean.. if all the files and directory structure looks and are accessible like Linux is it possible to reverse engineer a newer iOS and to install it in the same way that you'd upgrade say Ubuntu

sorry for the noob q

thanks for the reply. I realise noone has done it. Can anyone explain why it is not 'theoretically' possible to overwrite ios with newer versions of the ios system files? Its obviously more complicated than that for some reason.

I mean if the problem of up/downgrading ios using firmware is because apple needs to sign the change, what is stopping people from just getting a copy of the newer/older versions of the ios system files and overwriting them using the file management afforded by a previous jb.
