iPod touch NOOB Q: Battery Life indicator

I just got my Touch last night and was wondering something:

Is there anywhere on it to see how much battery life remains? I mean besides the little icon in the top right corner, obviously.

I noticed when you plug it in to charge that it shows how far along the charge is... is there anything like that you can check without plugging it in??

I searched apps thinking that it would be a commonly requested one but didn't find anything.

I just remembered having the same issue with my Palm Pilot about 10 years ago and downloading an "app" (or whatever they were called back then) to solve it

We've come so far yet...

Anyway, hopefully some developer catches on to it soon. If I knew how to develop I'd be hookin' it up!
