iPhone X Noobie question on dual camera vs single

Asking this for my sister as I didn’t really have a solid answer for her.

She’s debating on the xR or used X- so she had a question in regards to camera. The wide angle rear is better on the xR than the X but the X has the zoom one.

Here’s her question-

1. The zoom on the X is optical zoom rather than digital- but it’s only 2x. How many feet is that? Can’t someone just walk towards their subject rather than use the 2x?

2. Does Anyone have comparison for a digital zoom iPhone 8 vs optical zoom of a 8+ or X? She wants to see how big of a different it is

3. And when would anyone realistically use zoom in photos?

Of course you can walk closer towards the subject in certain circumstances. I love the zoom as my son is very active in sports and I've taken some great pics when he's on the field playing.

Walking closer to the subject is always possible for every type of camera. Zoom really comes in handy when you CAN’T get close enough.
