[Noobish question] Erasing HDD and Computer Sleep?

Sorry for this being such a Noobish question, but if I am erasing an external HDD and my MBP goes to sleep, will the disk continue to be erased, or will I have to use Caffeine to keep it awake? Thanks in advance!

No, the disk will not be erased while computer is slept.

If you want to do a "secure erase" (which takes some time), do this:

Go to System Preferences, Energy Saver.

Set COMPUTER SLEEP to NEVER.

Display sleep doesn't matter.

Erase the drive, then re-set your energy saver settings...

Welcome to the new normal. The new Macbook Air's will even sleep on long Apple update downloads and clones. Battery life is now more important than usability.

Note I haven't bought a MacBook for years until this 2014 Air. So I have no idea how long this brilliance has been around.
