I have a 2.33 GHz MBP C2D, and I'm planning on stitching together a couple video clips. Currently they are all in .mp4 format, each about 5-7 minutes long. I dragged them all into iMovie and it says its going to take about half an hour to import them. I know video stuff can take a while, but is this normal?

It's normal when you're trying to import a non-standard video format for editing. MPEG-4 is really a delivery format, not intended for further editing. Since by default, iMovie uses .DV or HDV, you should convert to one of those prior to importing.
