Ever since I got my macbook, I've been connecting to my work network through Parallel virtual desktop. Previously the VPN client used for Nortel VPN will not work with intel Mac because it loaded a PPC kernel extension at startup. So I had to run the windows VPN client under virtualization. The whole setup work fine and I had no issue with bringing it up other than the speed as you would expect.
Now that there is a intel native version of the VPN client, I installed it and was expecting some speedup, but was shocked to find that the performance in OSX was 2-3x slower.
When I logged on to work, I mostly logged onto a UNIX network and run Unix only CAD tools that uses X11 for graphics display back to my macbook. Previously when I logged on, I ran SSH & exceed (X11 server for windows) under Parallel virtualization within the VPN client inside windows. As you can see there is a stack of layer to get from remote unix host to my macbook, but the speed of the X11 window was tolerable.
Under OSX, I would initiate OSX built-in X11, fire up xterm, logged to the remotehost through SSH. All of this under the native VPN client. With OSX unix underpinning etc, I expected the X11 window performance to be improved, but it's at least 2x-3x slower.
So does anybody have any idea where the slowdown come from. IS it OSX X11 implementation, SSH configuration, native Nortel VPN client?
