Norton Internet Software apparently blocking browser and email functions on two iMacs.
Removed it and problem went away.
Does the Mac really need the alleged Norton virus protection?

Opinions differ. I think that if you're careful, and don't install software from shady places you'll be fine. Run a content blocker as well. If you don't trust a file, scan it with malwarebytes.

Does a Mac need virus protection? A solid argument can be made for either side.

Does a Mac or PC need Norton? Absolutely not. :D

If you're dead set on have an antivirus on your Mac (and paying for it), get BitDefender. If you're ok with free, consider Sophos.
