Just starting this morning, whenever I am on the phone, I am unable to do anything internet related. The phone shows full service. I am unable to send any pictures through messages, go on safari, instagram, facebook, etc. I get an error message saying "Cellular data connections are not available during this call" I can send texts through text message, NOT iMessage. But when I hang up the phone, iMessage works again, and all the internet stuff works.:confused::confused::confused:

Im on Sprint with the 4s

Maybe using WiFi, but otherwise, it is not technically possible.

Ive done it so many types walking in New York City not on WIFI. IS there a data reset or something? Why do you say its not technically possible?

It's the way CDMA works. In order to do both phone and data, you'd need two radios - the iPhone only has one radio. It's either or.

Same on Verizon.

AT&T is GSM, and can do both at the same time through the same radio because the channels are handled differently.

Sometimes when u r in a big city u will be on wifi and not even know it. I noticed once that I was on an AT&T wifi hotspot, probably from a local coffee shop.

This is not right. Ive ALWAYS been able to use data when on a call. This is the 1st time ive had this issue. Ive even WIFI off and never had this issue. The lady on Sprint right now is saying that with WIFI off, I can not do anything data wise while on a call. WTF. Ive never had that issue up until now. I did a network reset. With WIFI on right now while on a call I can use data, but with WIFI off and 3G on, I cant. Thats what you guys are saying. I dont understand. Ive never had that issue.

My parents are both on Verizon and just started having this issue within the last week.

No, you've just never really noticed. This isn't something new, it's a technical limitation of the CDMA network, and not limited to the iPhone.

Hence, the AT&T ad:

Not possible. You can use data on a call if connected to Wi-Fi only on verizon or sprint as they are CDMA 2000. Otherwise, add a radio and re program the phone to handle SVDO. Problem solved.

Wow alright. i got you guys. So how do I add a radio and re program the phone to handle SVDO?

No you didnt.
Its a limitation with CDMA tech.
No iphone currently on verizon or Sprint can use carrier data while on the phone.
Only if you're connected to wifi you can pull data and stay on the phone.
This is a well known fact for years and a reason AT&T puts out commercials that is the only carrier in the US that lets your iphone call and use data at the same time.

Pretty much common knowledge, you'd think.
