Anyone else plug into their machine, have it say "Not Charging," when it actually IS charging?

Yes this is normal behaviour. The ipad will "trickle" charge on most any usb port but will only charge at normal rate on high current ports.

If you download the Apple iPad User Guide from here and look up the section about the battery (which is on page 33-34 in the current edition), you will see your answer:

The iPad User Guide said:
If your Mac or PC doesn’t provide enough power to charge iPad, a Not Charging message appears in the status bar. To charge iPad, disconnect it from your computer and connect it to a power outlet using the included Dock Connector to USB Cable and 10W USB Power Adapter.

One other note: the USB port you're using is working just fine. Apple broke the USB spec with the amount of power that the iPad draws; it just so happens that Apple's current computers (since mid-2008) provide sufficient power on their USB ports.

Ah, that explains it, then.

My iMac just blew up, so I migrated over to my PC. I'm plugged into a primary USB port (rear, not front panel), but I guess it still isn't as powerful as the iMac's USB port.

Thanks!
