I recently replaced the entire display on my macbook 5,2 and installed Sierra with DosDude1's patch (I didn't feel like High Sierra or Mojave would have done well). I have a core 2 duo and 6GB ram. It boots ok and I can see the screen, but it is nothing like my old macbook 1,1 was. Is this possibly a side effect of the patch? If I drop down to an older version, might I see a difference? Just wondering.

Never mind. It is a known issue that was dealt with via the brightness app. On another note: Upgrading to Mojave and installing all patches (plus the brightness app) fixed this issue.
