Mac NOOB - my MAC build date is 2 days old, but I am pretty geeky....

I got Fusion and XP running - amazing! I can easily connect my pptp VPN in XP, I have Visual studio running in 'Unity' on Mac - connecting to SQL Server ... can't believe it went that smoothly. But I am struggling with the Mac networking stuff. I can connect to the VPN (it authenticates fine) through Internet Connect - but I can't connect to any of the resources on the LAN. I can't even ping the server through Terminal.

In XP, I set the hosts file to have my server name (ie: Server1) associated with it's IP address. I see that Mac has a similar LocalHosts entry in the NetInfo Manager. But in XP when I connect by VPN I can immediately ping the various IP addresses, so I am obviously missing something. I also looked at the 'Preferences' -> 'Network' dialog, and tried manually setting the VPN DNS.

I have a mail server, SQL Server, file share and a couple of other services that I need the VPN for. I can continue to run everything in my XP install - but I am really hoping to prove all my colleagues wrong - and get this Mac working with as many apps being native OSX as possible. I have done lots of reading, and am appreciative of any links to good overviews, as I am an Apple Fanboy in training. :p
