not recognizing ram when running xp on bootcamp or parallel

I have recently installed xp to bootcamp, and installed parallel as well. Why is it that if I run xp either from bootcamp or parallel I get a different set of ram recognitions. If go to system options, I only see 512MB of ram if I run it on parallel and I get 2.98GB RAM if I run it on bootcamp, while my macbook pro has 4gb ram. Is this normal? If not how do i fix it?
