Just bought a brand new 15" and, so far, I am less than pleased with how it's handling Lightroom. The moment I start doing selective edits by using the radial filter or adjustment brush, those fans come on at full blaze and the computer gets really hot.

Lightroom is basically the only "pro" tool I use a computer for, with an occasional visit into Photoshop, so I'm confused why this new (baseline) 15" isn't handling those files in Lightroom as well as my 2013 13" MBP (2.4 i5, 8GB RAM). My 2013 MBP does start running the fans but NOWHERE NEAR as loud, and the computer barely gets warm. Plus I'm noticing the battery on the new 15" is draining insanely fast in contrast to my 2013 MBP.

Am I doing something wrong? Can someone help me understand what's going on and why I'm not getting a better performance on this much newer machine? I don't really know a whole lot about processors and all that computer stuff so this is really confusing me.

Thanks

Check what's eating up resources in Activity Monitor it may be temporary until the system settles down. I did notice the battery drains quicker than I expected on the 2018 15" but I haven't checked deeper what's going on.

Other than the noise and higher temps, does it handle the actual work in Lightroom better or worse in terms of performance factors(responsiveness, time, etc.)?

Also, what is your configuration?

yeah. I noticed that in Logic pro, the 15" i returned also ramped up fans much faster than my old 2012 15".
these machines run hot.

still, it should be significantly faster in lightroom

It's kicking on the GPU. So it will run way faster, but it makes twice as much heat. And uses more battery.

You can't beat physics. :) or no such thing as a free lunch.

I wonder how the Vega GPUs work with Lightroom and/or Photoshop. Anyone know?

All the reviews I seen and did talk to say that the RAM helps with photography. The Vega not something to worry about getting. Off-course, I have no real world experience with that Vega.

Actually, GPUs matter for photo processing. From Adobe "a GPU impacts performance in several ways on Lightroom
Using a compatible graphics processor (also called a graphics card, video card, or GPU) lets you experience better performance with Lightroom CC and Lightroom Classic CC." Specific advantages of a GPU include: Speeds up the task of adjusting images in Detail view, Provides a significant speed improvement on high-resolution displays, such as 4K and 5K monitors.

Memory is also important because the images are n-dimensional tensors that have to be held in some sort of memory.
