Due to Apple not allowing me to upgrade unless I have a WiFi connection, I will not install it anytime soon on my just purchased iPhone 14 ProMax.

Apple should realize that a 5G connection is just as good as WiFi, especially in these modern times.

UPDATE: now installed due to me calming down and retrying to install it.

You already HAVE iOS 16 installed if you own an iPhone 14 Pro Max as the 14-series is shipping with it preinstalled and does not support any other version of iOS... 🤪
Nope. Upgraded to it from a 12 ProM by having a transfer of apps and data via close proximity of the phones. iOS 15.7 works fine on the 14.

But hide WiFi address and Serial number first :)

I doubt it’s possible that phone was not shipped with iOS 16.

That is simply not possible. iPhone 14 series cannot run iOS 15.7.
You can however transfer data from ANY older version (like iOS15 or 14 or even 12), but that transfers the USER DATA only, not the operating system! The 14 Pro Max's software is iOS 16. Believe us here.

Go check out yourself on your 14 Pro Max: Setting, General, About. Look what it says under "iOS Version". I bet it's 16.0 ;)

There is no version of iOS 15 that runs on the iPhone 14 series and restoring a backup from an older device only moves your data, not the old operating system. Your phone is probably offering the 16.0.2 bug fix update to whatever version of 16 came on your phone.
Check to be sure that the "allow more data" option is enabled on your phone, which should allow you to get updates that way. Instructions are here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT211828

I’m in a hotel with a flakey wifi: sometimes on, sometimes off. Hardly anyone staying mid-day, so I popped into the lobby to try it there.

And it did say 16.0.2 on the update screen. I just saw the 16 logo and assumed it was upgrading to that.

Me bad … 🤦🏻

it took something like 45 minutes to download: first it said 4 minutes, then 20, then 2 hours, then 35, and a bunch of numbers in between.

But while on 5G with all bars, the download and install button was not available - maybe it was a bug?
