OK, so I have the new macbook pro, great computer, and I enjoy watching my media on my HDTV. I connect via DVI to video (s-video) and have had no problems until yesterday (and this is where things get weird).

WHen I connect, the background on my comp is shown on my tv without and of the files that are on it. SO, when I am playing media on my comp, and am connected to my tv, the media does not play on the tv. all i see is that naked desktop image frozen in time.

This things killin' me guys. any ideas?!

I think you may have extended desktop switched on. To check, try draging something to left or right to see if it goes onto your HDTV. You can change it to mirror mode by going to system preferences/display and there should be some options in there about dual monitors. Hope this helps!
