So firstly I've got to admit I might have a little bit of an addiction to buying every cheap 12,2 iMac on FB MP.... 🤣
and Secondly.... NO!!! My fans aren't spinning at MAX after replacing the HDD or leaving a temp sensor unplugged 😝
The screenshots below pretty much outline all the machine specifics..
**All of them have had a solder bridge between pin 6 and 7 on the SATA power pins on the logic board. To stop the HDD fan running at MAX once the factory HDD has been replaced with an SSD. As outlined HERE.**
What I started to notice with so many 12,2's is the HDD fan would spin at a baseline of 2500rpm on some... and 1100rpm on others... 🤔
After searching for a correlation between the the machines with the same behavior, the only thing I could see is the SMC Versions differed (refer photos).
So the machines that have
SMC: 1.72f5 (HDD idle fan speed = 2500rpm) Noticeable fan noise
SMC: 1.72f1 (HDD idle fan speed = 1100rpm) Minimal fan noise
All these machines usually have AMD WX3200 GPU's installed in them running Sequoia via OCLP... But because OCLP spoofs the "System Firmware" and "SMC Version" numbers... I reverted the GPU back to a HD6770M and a HDD I had laying around with HS installed on it so I could capture the screenshots..
>>The fans behave Identical as above when the WX3200's and OCLP are in play....<<
Has anyone else noticed this?
How does SMC Ver: 1.17f2 Behave??
Is it possible to RollBack/Flash older SMC versions?
***Yes I could just use 'Macs Fan Control' or similar... But I would prefer not to if possible***
I can see how having that higher idle HDD fan speed would make sense trying to keep HDD plater drives running cooler... But is it really needed for SSD's??? 🤷♂️
