So, if you're using an app full screen and that app does not have a menu bar, like a video game, will the top 'menu bar area' be blacked out so you don't see the notch? Genuinely curious about this use case.
 
I hope so. The thing is ugly and would be distracting when looking at photos and I don't think that would get used to it. It's different to an iPhone which is mostly used in a portrait orientation.

You will only "see" the notch when the menu bar is shown:

I think is the best implementation they could make so the screen ratio stays unaltered.
