notes and contacts closing on open

My buddy is having a problem with his ipad 3, i believe its running ios6, i really have no idea.

When he opens either notes or contacts it immediately closes back to the home screen.

Any ideas?

I tried googling a few different terms but couldn't really find anything helpful.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
