Notes and Reminders aren't pushed?

I just created a couple notes and reminders in OS X. Put my phone in Airplane mode and... no new notes/reminders. Looks like they just fetch for new items when you open the app? Unless there some sort of longer delay until they get pushed/the phone or the phone queries for them.
