Writing a number followed by a parentheses and a space , I get a result of just the number and a period
This is how it should be or I would like it to be

3) example

Instead I get an indentation like a numbered list
3. example

It only happens in the Notes app on both macOS Sonoma 14.7.6 and iOS 18.5
I searched everywhere for a shortcut with this result : didn't find anything, not only in Notes -Format Menu
but on the macOS keyboard shortcuts neither.

It happens on my husband devices as well
Are we the only ones?

And before someone suggests it , I disabled the double space = period but of course , nothing changes
Any suggestions how to avoid it?

Number followed by period then paren works fine. Not a bug. Just conventional, way back to typewriting and to pen & ink. Just the English language and its evolving accepted norms. Recently read that the use on semicolons has dropped substantially over the last few years. I have no life…..

This function is controlled by the setting Edit > Substitutions > Smart Lists (only available on the Mac version). Apple is treating "1)" the same as "1." which is automatically formatted as a numbered list.
