Notes in Mail

I have recently noticed a problem with Notes in Mail. I can create notes, I can see all my old notes, but I cannot make any new notes. I have seen many posts on how Mail seems to be one of the main programs that got corrupted in the 10.5.3 update but I thought I would take a shot in the dark to see if any one new how to fix this problem. (With out re-installing) Thanks.
