Nothing works

Why am I having such an incredibly hard time with my Macs? It seems like everything that I have tried to do with them lately leads to a glitch, bug and road-block.
I tried to partition a new 2TB external drive into several volumes and all I get are Disk Utility errors that the 'partition map is too small.. Then I wanted to clone a volume so I would have a secondary place to test out Serra, but that to0 was stopped in its tracks by a FileVault error.
What's the point?

Everyone else is able to maintain multiple systems and virtual machines and networks and I am just taking one step forward and two steps back.
No sooner did I get finished setting-up a used AirPort Extreme - and it died less than a week later.
Why?

What could I have done wrong that had the APE running fine for a few days, and then has it blinking amber and smelling slightly burnt??? I actually think it might have gotten some sort of surge through the cable line, because it coincided with a Comcast outage.

Elves?

Why do they break my computer stuff? How do I make them go away?

Hard to say what could cause this. Hubris? Unwise diet? Mistreatment of the neighborhood weasels?

Why do they break my computer stuff? How do I make them go away?
