So my goal was just to see the difference in speed through my new Kanex tbolt to Ethernet + USB 3.0 adapter on my USB-speed-deprived 2011 2.7 i5 iMac.
So it is no surprise that the read & write speeds have improved considerably, going 2.0 to 3.0 on the same external HD (SP Armor 30, 1 TB 5400 rpm). For example, using the Black Magic speed test, I see approximately a 3x speed change. The speed through the adapter is the same if the HD is connected directly or through the powered hub (12V 2A Anker AH111).
The thing I noticed that was a bit strange was the ~25% difference in speed running 2.0 USB (i.e., not through the Kanex) directly vs. through the hub.
Easier to see through just the numbers. These numbers are pretty consistent no matter how many times I run the test. I'm not paying so much attention to the actual MB/s speeds as I don't know how accurate the Blackmagic app is, but more to the relative speeds, i.e., the percentage difference.
USB2, directly to mac - ~31 write/~37 read
USB2, through hub - ~24 write/~30 read
USB3, directly to mac - ~100 write/~108 read
USB3, through hub - ~104 write/~107 read
So it drops in speed when running USB 2 through the hub, but speed stays the same when running USB 3 through the hub. Dunno, maybe this was already common knowledge, new to me though... just like USB 3.0 is.
