Notification problems when using iMessage on Mac and iPad

I'm hoping someone can help because I can't figure this out. When I send my wife an iMessage through my iPhone, her notification sound plays. When I send it via my mac or iPad, she still gets the message, but no notification sound. Anyone else having same issues or can help?
