NotificationCent crazy random cpu usage

I just noticed, after waking up my MacBook Pro (13" early 2011 OS X 10.9.5), its fan was noising like crazy. I took a look at the running process and discovered NotificationCent was using 161% of my cpu. I had to force quit in order to bring back the fan to normal.

Has anyone any idea why this might be happening? I'd like to avoid this problem in the future.
