Notifications through headphones?

i recently upgraded to 4.2.1, so i'm not sure if this is the cause for it. lately, i've noticed that i'll be listening to music through my headphone jack, but notifications for things like new mail still play through the external speakers instead of the headphones. the music will fade in and out correctly, but the notification doesn't play in the headphones. has anyone else noticed similarly?
