This happens once in a while but it's never anything I cared about until now. When I pick my phone up sometimes there is one or two notifications showing, rarely are they important. A few minutes ago there was something that could be very important, my eyes partially scanned it but I opened the phone -- then it was gone.

Where is it? It was probably a scam but I'd like to check it to be sure. Where do I find it?

They should be there in the Message centre until you click the X or clear or left swipe this out, not just like that…. Pull the lock screen down and than in the middle up… if the message doesn’t come up and only “no older Notification” - than you are alone… sorry

Notifications won't show on the Lock Screen unless the notification settings for the application involved allow it. The same goes for the Notification Center as well as Banners. Also, iOS doesn't have an overall Notification history feature beyond these settings.

What you saw…was it on the Lock Screen or was it a Banner at the top of the screen?

Check all the Notification settings (in Settings) for your apps to see if anything needs to be changed. Also, an app may contain its own set of notification settings.

Some apps display notifications but and show a list/history of notifications within the app itself…but some don't.

Certain notifications that are priority or on system notifications like AirPods and Apple Watch batteries do still show even if locked.
