iPod touch nube here with couple questions cuncering Itouch

Hello, new here with Itouch and have a couple questions,

1. how do I know what generation I have, I did just download Iphone 3.0 and seems to be working

2. is there an app that tells me what apps are running, not sure if I am getting them closed, especially with 3.0.
