I purchased the activation code about a week ago and have not received one in email. I have gone to the nullriver site and requested a re-send 4 times with no response. No emails in Junk or any other searchable account. No response at all from them. Any Ideas??

Nullriver Medialink 2.0A1 Snow Leopard Release - BEWARE !!

Hi Forum,
Medialink 2.0A1 is officially a broken release. Sure it´s alpha, but if you want to access your media files it just crashes. Hell, it crashes even when updating. You have to manually trash the prefPane just for helping it not crash at the upgrade and not reverting top the previous version.
So i tried everything, beginning with a mint 10.6.1 and a mint PS3 3.0 - firmware and nothing helps.
Nullriver doesn´t even mention this problems, they don´t even have a troubleshotting page.
I´m so pissed right now. I never experienced such a buggy software release. sure its alpha, but it just doesn´t work from the start.

Urbana, how about asking for general help to a customer service rep?

2.0Alpha1 works perfect for me.

Given their track record so far I'm considering asking for a refund (they apparently have a 30-day return policy). So far MP3/AAC files works well but video fails miserably; the stream chokes on every single thing I've tried. PS3 Media Server may not have as nice of an interface but it works on everything I've thrown at it so far. Doesn't help that any requests to their helpdesk gets me either a boilerplate troubleshooting email or no response at all.

If you read on the ML product page it clearly states what kind of formats it supports. Nullriver hasn't released the greatest set of updates recently, but I'm glad that the 2.0 alpha works great for me. The full version as it says on their site will support transcoding much like PS3MS. I haven't managed to get PS3MS to work on my network and I couldn't be bothered to TS it.

Now, if the free software works for you, why did you opt to buy ML?

I realize that, and none of them work. The playback will run fine for a minute or two then die and I'm not trying to stream incredibly intensive files here; a lot of the files I've tried are h.264 MP4 which are under 20MB. Copying the file to the PS3 then playing as opposed to just streaming works fine for the exact same files.

I didn't know about the free software before purchasing MediaLink and the iLife integration.

Which version of ML do you have? I know I have serious problems with 1.72 (pretty much what you've described), and downgraded to 1.6. But the new 2.0A1 works just as well, if not better since it's been released. When you copied those files over, how fast was it? Do thumbnails load quickly? And do you get those error popups?

Ah, sorry, I assumed you bought ML after you tried PS3MS. Now I think about it, that was a pretty bad assumption. :(

PS3 Media Server doesn't work that well for me; the transcoding of files didn't work 'out of the box', and I've no idea what to tinker with.

MediaLink is ok, even though I'm constantly getting errors on the PS3 even when streaming is working.

Vuze, I rarely use, so can't comment.

Rivet was poor enough, but the latest version fixed mp4 streaming on the PS3, for me it's the best of them.

Are there any other options I haven't tried?

I've tried everything from 1.59 up to 2.0a1 with the same result. Part of this situation is my fault because everything else worked fine so I just assumed that video should be fine as well and made the purchase. Lesson learned...

When you copied those files over, how fast was it?
The small files took a matter of seconds to copy. The larger DVD rips took 5-10 minutes to copy, depending on the bitrate I ripped them at. The DVDs I tested were encoded in H.265/MP4 at 1500kbps up to 2500kbps with the same results. The smaller I also tried to stream were 640x480 H.264 MP4 @ 1700kbps.

Do thumbnails load quickly?
Very quickly, no problems there. I get a DLNA protocol error 2006 every now and then but it doesn't seem to cause any major problems.

And do you get those error popups?
Yep. I get that damned 80710736 network error followed by the video stopping with an 800288D8

The same problem with me... I bought medialink on September 18th and no activation code neither email answered or code resent... so a couple of days ago I contact paypal and open a dispute in the PayPal Security Centre.. Waiting for the resolution.... Anyone with the same issue?

Well, I've purchased this great app at version 1.6 and have been constantly using it without problems up to (and including) version 1.72.

Since upgrading to Snow Leopard last week, though, I was stuck with the new 2.0 alpha, which unfortunately is far from stable. All I'm complaining about so far is the weird network error that keeps popping up on my PS3 when watching a movie, but that alone is enough to render the experience dreadful. I've already submitted a support request on their site and am waiting for a reply. Hope they fix it soon (but I wouldn't hold too much hope, considering their update frequency - or better, lack of).

Go back to 1.7.2

1.7.2 works fine on SL, I was on Alpha2, but downgraded. Get hold of 1.7.2 file and just double click. Mine is back working. The only thing is it's 32 bit, but I don't care. It works!

Well, that's good to know and it's most definitely what I'll do as well.

Still, the guys from Nullriver actually replied to me and said they were still working on the final version, but had no idea when it would be available. They also said that these kind of errors are somewhat expected due to the "really bad Sony's code" (their words).

medialink sucking now...

This has been a WONDERFUL product. Until now.
If you are having problems, do what I did, check your console/console messages.

the dashes in the router code are from me, but my console is constantly updating, by the second, with these errors.

Medialink still appears on my PS3, like it wants to work, and I can play Itunes, a few movies, but for the most part, NADA!!!

SnowLeopard...No Excuse. They knew it was coming.

There are other media servers out there, its not like they have a monopoly.
I paid 20 bucks 2 or 3 years ago, so move on I will. God knows what all that gibberish is going to do with my permissions and now I know why the slowdowns.

i can't seem to even be able to INPUT the activation code they sent me. the box in the system preferences won't accept type. idiots.

what are the free alternatives out there that will allow me to use my PS3 to watch tv shows and movies stored on my computer? any suggestions would be much appreciated...

I have been playing with An app called "PS3 Media Server". It works ok for a free solution. The only problem I have experienced with PS3MS is that the audio and video are out of sync when it transcodes the movie I am watching, which is the only way I can watch them over my old g wifi network. I have seen other users with this problem and I am working on gettingbit resolved.

Bumping this again.

Is NullRiver even trying anymore? I haven't seen an update since 2009.

It's a mess really... They keep releasing beta versions, which honestly are getting worse and worse. The latest (2.0b7) simply hung up my Mac completely after a DLNA network error. I went back to 2.0b6 but even that is so full of problems - there's no way to directly watch an MP4 video without a severe crash a few minutes into it and forget about transcoding it, it's so jerky that I don't even know why they're bothering.

The other day I gave Rivet a try... it's perfectly stable and works wonderfully and the only reason I haven't bought it yet and got rid of MediaLink is because they still have a stupid issue with photo sorting (i.e. by name, when it should be by date taken).

But honestly, I don't get what the Nullriver guys are up to... they had a great application with the 1.7 release and they completely f....d it all up with the 2.0 upgrade. Why didn't they just made 1.7 Snow Leopard compatible instead of getting into all that transcoding crap that's useless anyway?!

they all work pretty crappy for me. so i just use ps3media server and copy the movies to my ps3 to watch or else it keeps studdering.
