Number porting help iPhone 5.

Okay so I just signed up for Verizon and got the Motrola Droid Razr, ported my number from AT&T from my dads plan and have been using it on my Droid, however I have come to find out Verizon sucks where I live, and where I am moving Verizon does not have Coverage, AT ALL. So its before the 14 days and I am going to return the phones and cancel the service. I have ordered the iPhone 5, which is on back order... my question is, before I get my phone I have to have my Verizon account deactivated, AT&T has that number on file, however it is my understanding that the number cannot port when its not active, which I have to deactivate it because I dont want to be charged a ETF. One of the AT&T reps said and I quote "Yes, you can cancel your Verizon service today and it would still port" I don't beilve them at all. I do not want to loose my number, I have had it for so many years. I was just gonna pay Google Voice to port my number, but it seems like they do not support that for my area code, or something. So now, I am stuck. I was considering going into the AT&T store, asking for a sim card, activating a go phone account transferring the number, than canceling the Verizon service... however I have read that AT&T will not transfer a number from a Go Phone account... Are there any other options for me?
