Number Porting

I'm with At&t right now but will be switching to Verizon. My contract is up on Oct. 20th. Let's say the iPhone comes out on the 14th and there will be a supply shortage.

Question is. Do I need to wait until the 20th to port my number or could I do it on the 14th and not get nailed with a bunch of fees from At&t for something or other while I just pay for 2 contracts for a weeks overlap

I believe you can port your number within 30 days of starting your new contract.
