For my exercise physiology lab, our teacher sends us the .xls file via our school's web-portal for that day's lab. I understand that Numbers should be compatible with Excel and should be able to open it. However, when I open open his email and try to open it, I get the message "file format is invalid," so I have to get a classmate who can open it to email it to me and I can then open it.

If it's of any relevance, the .xls file is an Excel 97-2004.

Can anybody shed some light as to why I can't open it from my teacher's email via the school's web-portal, yet I can open it when somebody else, who can open it, sends it to me?
